Ive noticed 9 new Whatsapp messages come through from my holiday group, but Im working on this task at the moment and Im going to  choose  to continue doing so. Five tips for asking better questions Now that I am committed to living on a farm, which is sort of the anti-New York City, visiting New York City no longer brings up flashbacks to a really, really difficult lifestyle. Instead, New York fills my head with ideas. The first one is a billboard I saw as soon as I got off the plane: A good question is the new answer. That rings true to me. I have been writing about asking questions for a long time. Its the best way to have a meaningful conversation and its the best way to rope in a mentor or look like a star performer. People spend more time thinking about answers than questions, but its the questions that make you look smart. 1. Good questions require creative thinking. This has always been true, I think. Good questions are fundamentally creative. But today, when all facts are available to all people, its the questions that have become most important. To get to the answer, you have to ask the right question in a search bar. But also, to differentiate yourself in the workplace, you need to focus on questions, since answers are a commodity. 2. When youre lost, look for questions, not answers. As my career shifts, I find that the key to keeping the shift moving in a productive way is to ask good questions. Its ironic, because one of the most frequent questions I get from people is, Whats the best way to make a career change? And the answer is to ask much more insightful questions than that one. For example, I know I want to write about the farm, but Im not sure how to do it. So Ive been asking questions about how photos fit into blogs and what is the intersection of farming, family, and business? 3. Think of your career path as a question path. I am also spending time redecorating the farm house. Actually, to call it redecorating is a stretch, since the farmer moved in twenty years ago when the couple living there died, and did not do one single thing to redecorate. So the house is a time capsule from the 1940s when it was designed. Anyway, I wouldnt say redecorating is a career change, but maybe just a vocation vacation. Do you know that term? You try out a career for a few weeks? Thats what Ive been doing. And I realized that Id only want to be an interior designer for my own house. But I like learning about interior design. And I am realizing that any career shift is about learning and exploring until you land in the right spot. Questions I am asking lately: What is Steampunk Style? (Turns out I adore it.) Heres an example from the movie The Golden Compass: How do you create a space that has texture? I took three conference calls while I was wandering through ABC Home. I thought that if I spent time there, I would somehow learn from being surrounded by examples, like this one: Some of you will ask what these questions have to do with career change. But a career is not a history of how you make money. A career is a learning path. Its what direction you take in your personal learning. 4. Asking good questions takes work â€" that you have to do yourself. This struck me during my New York trip as well, because one of my best friends is Lisa Nielsen, who leads New York City Public School technology initiatives and writes a blog about education reform. She is a big advocate of me homeschooling my kids. She says that kids dont need to learn subjects. Kids need to learn how to ask questions about things they are passionate about. And thats no small task: First, you have to learn how to find your passions. Then you have to learn how to ask questions. Most adults cant do either thing well, which is a good argument for taking kids out of school, I have to admit. 5. Field other peoples questions to get better at asking questions. Finally, the last thing I did in New York is visit Seth Godins office, to interview him for a webinar. The biggest criticism I received after the interview is that my commentary about peoples questions was obnoxious. This is true. I am becoming increasingly impatient with questions that reflect poor self-knowledge. And with questions that reflect a penchant for finding roadblocks instead of finding ways to soar. Neither of these bad question types seem genuine, or useful. (Here are some examples of questions like that.) No one complained about Seth during the webinar though, because he had a better approach to the questions. He tells people what they are really asking. So the webinar was really a webinar on, among other things, how to ask a good question. The webinar also served as a good lesson for me. Instead of complaining about the question I get, I should answer the question by sharpening the question. People almost always know the answer to the real question but the real answer is often scary. So we conjure up an ancillary question to distract us from reality. I also need to be more kind about peoples questions, by helping them figure out what their real question is. And the process helps me do it with my life, too. For example, Im not sure my real question is What is Steampunk Style? My real question is how does style fit into my career right now?

Then in paragraph two, he highlights soft skills Many of these skills will be repeated in a resume, but don’t worry! If you can illustrate how they can help your target company meet specific goals, you will definitely impress the hiring manager.How to write an effective cover letterPutting together an effective cover letter as a freshly-minted graduate is not rocket science The first step is to try and make an emotional connection through your writing. This can be done by:Emphasizing your passion for the position. Don’t be dishonest, but if you’re truly excited about the opportunity to work for the target company, bring it up. Explain how you enjoy their products and like the direction they’re heading. Even if you’ve heard that they’re a great company to work for, or the office environment is stimulating â€" all this information can be incorporated into your cover letter.Finding out what charities your target company supports. If you also support this charity or appreciate its contribution to society, make sure to mention it in your writing! Write how you’d love working for a company that contributes to the community in such a positive way.Addressing the hiring manager by name. If you’re able to find the name of the person receiving your cover letter, it’s much better than writing something drab like “to whom it may concern.” Check the company website, call the company, surf LinkedIn. We are living in the internet age â€" this information is most likely available in the public domain.Step two is to show how you fit into your target company’s future. If you’ve been involved in any leadership roles here, that’s great to mention as well.Volunteering: If you have volunteer experience, demonstrate how it has helped you sharpen a tangible work skill (your ability to communicate with others, your confidence, your organization skills, etc.)If you’re strapped for ideas, there are many excellent cover letter examples available online to get your mind jump-started. Take time to enjoy your career path

Take time to enjoy your career path “Take pride in how far youve come. Have faith in how far you can go. But dont forget to enjoy the journey.” Michael Josephson This quote appeared on my calendar last month. I saw immediately how it applied to me, but also how it relates to the clients I work with. Hopefully it spoke to you too! Here are 2 takeaways to help motivate you. Look at where youve been Some of my clients are so focused on where they want to go that they don’t slow down to look at how far they have come. It is so important to celebrate the small achievements the steps you have taken to get to where you are now. Often I need to remind my clients to reflect back on the progress they have made. Often I need to remind myself! Celebrate the work, the struggle, the grit that got you to this point.  Look at where you can go. During tough career transitions, whether voluntary or involuntary, my clients lose faith in how far they can go. Sometimes they are beaten down by external factors, like a poor work environment, a bad manager, or a position they cannot hold on to. They can no longer see what is possible. Sometimes my clients have been beaten down by internal factors, like their inner critic voice, weak self-confidence or believing that their future goal is not obtainable. Keeping the faith is hard, especially when there may seem to be endless setbacks. I work with my clients to focus on their goal, their mission, their vision, their values â€" whatever it was that put them on this career journey in the first place. Re-connecting and holding onto the most critical thing, can help restore some faith in the journey. You only have one journey so enjoy it Enjoying the journey is the one that many of my clients struggle with. It is hard to find the joy in a job or a work environment that is so disconnected from what they want to be doing. However, I talk with my clients, and often remind them (and myself) that we can personally bring joy to every day. We can choose to infuse that joy by: completing a gratitude list each day setting aside a short time for meditation or journaling doing some self-care or self-compassion activities Some of my clients re-define their perspective on the journey from one of ‘my job is not fulfilling’ to focusing on their goal to obtain a different position. That change in perspective often helps my clients find enjoyment in the journey. The journey is now filled with curiosity, learning, new connections rather than with a focus on dread or dis-engagement. It’s our one journey. Let’s do our part to make it as fulfilling as possible!
